After a plea from the town’s police chief, Harwich residents voted to ban recreational marijuana businesses from setting up shop in town.

The zoning bylaw prohibiting non-medical-marijuana establishments passed by a wide margin at Town Meeting on Tuesday night. A two-thirds majority vote was required to pass the zoning change, and that was achieved as residents voted 184 to 48 in favor of the ban, according to the town clerk’s office.

The article prohibits all types of non-medical-marijuana establishments, including marijuana cultivators, testing labs, marijuana product manufacturers, and retailers “or any other types of licensed marijuana-related businesses” from operating in town.
