The marijuana vote was 2,682 against and 1,831 in favor. Medical marijuana is exempted and will be allowed.
Agawam has had a temporary moratorium on recreational sales since 2017. That ban was set to expire on Dec. 31.
Several council members expressed misgivings about legalized recreational marijuana, but said they would follow the choice of the voters, even though the non-binding nature of the question meant they were not required.
Sales would automatically become legal if Agawam were not to take formal action before the ban expired.
