Cape Cod Update

Another year of town meetings has gaveled to a close on Cape Cod. For the most part, the smoke has cleared – but not entirely.

The upshot? Most of the Cape’s 15 towns have banned retail marijuana businesses from their borders, while only a handful have embraced retail weed: Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham and Mashpee.

But reflecting the shifting sands on the topic, Bourne and Brewster, both of which seemed amenable to retail pot shops earlier last year, wound up banning retail businesses via petitioned town meeting articles in October and December, respectively. Both towns were subsequently sued by prospective marijuana businesses.

No retail pot shops have yet opened on the Cape, while the state’s first two legal retail businesses threw open their doors Nov. 20 in Northampton and Leicester. Cape Cod’s first medical marijuana operation, Triple M, opened in April last year in Mashpee.
